On June 11th, New Hampshire learned of the passing of the Honorable, Rep. Douglas Ley (D-Jaffrey), former House Majority Leader and five-term Representative. House Democratic Leader Renny Cushing (D-Hampton) released the following statement:
“I am deeply saddened to hear of Representative Ley’s passing. Doug valiantly led our Democratic Caucus for 2 years with humility and strength and I am proud to have had his example of leadership. Doug has been a great friend and colleague, touching the lives of countless people in the legislature. News of his passing is just devastating. I offer my condolences to the entire Ley family.”
Former Speaker Steve Shurtleff (D-Penacook), for whom Rep. Ley served as Majority Leader during the 2019 -2020 legislative session, released the following statement:
“The Honorable Doug Ley was a wonderful leader, teacher, legislator, and most importantly, friend. Throughout his 9 years in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, Doug was a respected colleague who gifted us with his knowledge, humor, quick wit, and noble values every day. He was a careful observer and kind listener, never shying away from a conversation to negotiate a solution. Working closely with Doug over the past few years, I admired his incredible intellect and ability to bring people together. Doug’s booming laugh could often be heard throughout the halls of the State House, and it always brought joy to those around him. The respect and love that Doug had for his staff and colleagues in the legislature embodied him as a person. It will be a long time before New Hampshire sees another man like Doug Ley. I extend my every prayer to his family, his wife Mary and sons Ethan and Isaac.”
